David Dorosz’s political thriller is being adapted for the screen

“The film development of my first novel, We All Leave, has begun,” announced David Dorosz, whose thriller was also shortlisted for the Margó Prize last year.

David Dorosz chose Lake Balaton as the setting for his debut novel. His thriller We All Leave (read an excerpt here) was shortlisted for the Margó Prize last year, and is now being adapted for the screen.

A film from the Balaton thriller

“Ever since childhood I’ve been a huge film fan, so it was a very special experience to return to my own story after writing the novel, and to go even deeper into it — this time with a filmmaker’s eye. While I’ve learnt a great deal, I now feel even more strongly, as I read through the material that has been completed, that this very contemporary story, one that is very much about us, could become a perfect film. The hard work is still ahead of us, but I can’t wait for you to see it on the screen!” Dorosz shared with his followers.

The author revealed that the film is being worked on, among others, by the producers of All Right, Lesson Learned and I Feel at Home Here. He is developing the screenplay together with Attila Veress.

David Dorosz holding the film adaptation of We All Leave

“What I’m holding in my hands is the basis of the screenplay for the We All Leave film, aka the ‘treatment’.”

David Dorosz previously worked as an opposition politician. In 2025, he published his debut novel, We All Leave. Set on Lake Balaton, the crime thriller centres on the connection between power and a mysterious murder. The author previously said of the book that it contains “the countless meetings, handshakes and conversations of the past 15 years”.

As a Margó Prize shortlist contender, David Dorosz revealed that he wanted to take on a bigger challenge with his first novel straight away, though at first he feared he might not even find a publisher for it. One thing he knew for certain, however: he did not want to write a wishy-washy novel.
